Role of ceiling fans in our lives

0

The rise in temperature is a global phenomenon that occurred largely due to deforestation, industrialization, urbanization as well as industrial and vehicular pollution to a greater extent. As a result, most population world over install air-conditioners in their residence, offices, and commercial establishments to maintain a pleasant or cool environment around them.

Air conditioners are expensive as well as consume more electricity and put an extra burden on pocket due to higher energy bills. That is why people choose ceiling fans to keep them cool in indoor and outdoor areas.

Unlike air conditioners, ceiling fans do not bring down the room temperature but the blades are rotated by the motor of the fan to move the air to give you a pleasant breezing effect on the body.

Ceiling fans for indoors and outdoors

Ceiling fans are far less expensive and consume much less energy and hence are an economical alternative to air conditioners that can be installed in rooms, kitchens, study, living, and dining areas in residences, offices, and every commercial establishment.

A vast variety of ceiling fans ranging from small to large-sized ceiling fans are available in various colors and designs, with or without LED light, to suit to your interior décor.

Quite often ceiling fans are installed in verandas and other outdoor areas like patios and decks to cool down the temperature while you relax or work there.

For outdoor surroundings, sturdy ceiling fans are there that are not only waterproof but strong enough to withstand harsh weather and endure elements.

DC and AC Ceiling fans

The electric motor, the main component of a ceiling fan, can be of two types i.e.  AC (Alternating Current) or DC (Direct Current).

AC is the electric current that reverses its direction whereas DC is an electric current that flows only in one direction. Since current supplied by the power companies is AC, most of the household electric appliances, including ceiling fans, are made using AC motors.

AC motors need to be connected to the power source directly to start functioning. The current from the power source helps rotate the rotor of the motor by creating a moment of force.

On the other hand, the motor of DC appliances like ceiling fans, are connected to AC i.e. direct power source through a transformer which helps convert AC power to DC.

The conversion of power from AC to DC reduces power consumption by the electric appliance as it uses the direct current only for rotating the motor’s rotor using a magnet system installed in the DC motor for opposing polarity.

Ceiling fans with DC motors currently available cannot be directly connected to DC power sources like solar panels or batteries etc. due to lack of technology.

Of late, DC technology has become more popular as DC fans consume less power and are incredibly quiet while working, which are used in applications like medical instruments, telecom switches, or car entertainment systems.

Because of low electromagnetic interference, DC fans are preferred for use in sensitive appliances like computers to prevent them from overheating.

Since, compared to AC ceiling fans, DC fans use much less voltage; ceiling fans with DC motors are quite trendy in Australia.
