Simply follow the below steps and get your silk curtains to look new and clean.

  1. Prepare The Tub

Fill a tub with lukewarm water and put your silk curtains into it. Make sure the curtains are completely covered with water. Add a mild detergent and mix with your hands. Let the curtains sit in the tub for a couple of minutes.

  1. Hand Washing

After a few minutes, start hand washing. We don’t advise you to wash your silk curtains in the machine as it may damage the delicate fabric. Add a pinch of extra detergent to the stains and rub it gently using your hands. Do not apply too much pressure otherwise, it would stretch and tear the fabric.

  1. Rinsing

The next step to hand washing is rinsing. Remove the curtains from the tub and let the soapy water drain. Refill the tub with clean, lukewarm water. Again put the silk curtains in clean water to remove all the suds. You can also remove the soap by squeezing the curtains, yet don’t exaggerate with too much pressure. Refill the tub again and again with clean water until no suds are left.

  1. Treat With Vinegar

Now it’s time to treat your silk curtains with vinegar. Add two tablespoons of vinegar to a tub filled with lukewarm water. Agitate the water so that the vinegar will reach all over the tub. Vinegar is a safe and light substitute for bleach and t plays a crucial role in preventing the curtains from discoloring and removing bad odors.

Gently rub the curtains using your hands and let them sit for 10 minutes. Drain the vinegar water and again put the curtains in clean, lukewarm water. Rinse well until the vinegar smell has gone.

  1. Drying

The drying process includes a couple of steps. First of all, squeeze the silk curtains as much as possible to remove the water. Avoid forcing and wringing the fabric as it can ruin it. Then place the curtains on soft towels and roll them up to remove the excess moisture. Once the towel gets moistened, unroll them. Next, hang the silk curtains to air dry. Avoid hanging them directly under sunlight as it can discolor and shrink the fabric.

  1. Ironing

The last step is ironing.  It is advisable to iron your silk curtains when they are slightly wet. This can easily remove wrinkles. Also, make sure to always iron on the inside only using the lowest temperature setting. Avoid its contact with the silk as it will burn the fabric.
